Civil rights in South africa
Gandhi was 24 years old when he arrived in South Africa in 1893 to work as a legal representative for the Muslim Indian Traders. Gandhi was in South Africa for 21 years and there he developed his political skills. Indians in south Africa were controlled by wealthy Muslims who employed Gandhi as a lawyer . In south Africa Gandhi faced discrimination against colored people. Gandhi was thrown off a train After refusing to move from first class. He protested and was allowed on first class the next day. When traveled further he was beaten by a driver for refusing to move for a European passenger. He was banned from many hotels. and one time he was ordered to remove his turban but he refused too do it. Gandhi stayed in South Africa longer to help the Indians oppose a bill to deny them the right to vote then Gandhi went to Joseph Chamberlin , British Colonial Secretary, asking him to reconsider his
position on this bill. even though he was unable to stop the bill the campaign was successful in drawing attention. In January 1897, when Gandhi landed in Durban, a mob
of white settlers attacked him. At a mass protest meeting held in Johannesburg on 11
September that year, Gandhi adopted his still growing Non violent protest method. The community accepted this plan, resulting in a seven-year struggle, thousands of Indians were jailed, whipped, or shot for striking. Gandhi's ideas took form, and the concept of Nonviolence matured
during this struggle. After the black majority came to power in South Africa,
Gandhi was declared a national hero with many memorials.
